Election

We are committed to recruiting, training, and endorsing bold, pro-environment candidates — up and down the ballot — who will fight for climate justice and equity.

Defeating “Chevron Cheryl”, Electing Eloise into the State Assembly

We helped elect Eloise Gómez Reyes to represent Assembly District 47 in the Inland Empire. Working with labor, consumer attorneys and other progressive groups, CLCV took part in a $1.5 million independent campaign effort to oust longtime Assemblymember Cheryl Brown. “Chevron Cheryl” accepted huge campaign donations from Big Oil and was one of industry’s greatest allies in the Assembly. She represented a district with the highest pollution and levels of ozone and smog in the state, yet consistently voted against addressing these health issues.

We named Brown to the League of Conservation Voters’ “Dirty Dozen in the States” list. Brown was the first Californian to ever appear on the list, which identifies the most anti-environment state-level candidates from around the country.

We brought attention to how much money special interests were spending to keep Brown in her seat, and engaged voters who were less likely to go to the polls. We elected Eloise Gómez Reyes by 9.2 percent in 2016 — a community and environmental leader who can’t be bought by industry.

Flipping the 49th Congressional District for a Clean Energy Champion

CLCV was the first major group to endorse Mike Levin when he was running to represent the 49th Congressional District in Congress. We supported Levin early in 2018, when there were still 16 candidates in his crowded primary race.

Levin, a former environmental attorney, made climate change the center of his campaign. Our early support sent a strong signal to the political and environmental communities about the viability of Levin’s campaign, and helped him build crucial momentum. Levin won the seat without accepting a single dollar from corporate political committees or other special interests. His campaign was built and won on the grassroots support of CLCV and other independent groups.

Levin was the strongest environmental champion elected to the House in 2018. He helped to introduce the first major climate change legislation of the 116th Congress and has taken on key committee assignments where he is well-positioned to defend our state from climate impacts and rollbacks.
