Trouble for Joshua Tree National Park

Once again, Joshua Tree National Park is in trouble.

For the last three years, the Florida-Based corporation, NextEra Energyhas tried and failed four times to pass legislation here in California to bail out the Eagle Crest Pumped Storage Project, which would drain a desert aquifer underlying Joshua Tree National Park and would cost Californians billions. It’s failed every single time because it’s this simple – it’s a taxpayer-funded corporate bailout.

With legislators focusing on the ongoing public health crisis, NextEra is preying on this vulnerable time to attempt for the fifth time to get their bail out with their new bill, AB 1720. What’s worse, they’re using dark money tactics and front groups to exact influence with state legislators in Sacramento.

That’s why we need you to call your state Senator and urge them to vote NO on AB 1720.

We’re calling it like it is – AB 1720 would only benefit the shareholders for a project that will result in increasing energy costs and absolutely no benefits to our communities, would undermine our climate goals, and at the same time would absolutely devastate a fragile desert ecosystem, wildlife, and cultural resources in Joshua Tree. When we’re facing a global pandemic and record unemployment, we must stand up to this bad policy, especially since it’s failed four times before.

With the pandemic devastating communities across the state, why is the California legislature entertaining a corporate bailout that would be costly to Californians and destroy the environment?
